Doctor details burn injuries of Wednesbury pensioner who died after 'arson' attack on family home

A Home Office pathologist who examined the body of a pensioner who died after a house fire in Wednesbury has told a trial he developed complications as a result and they, as well as burns, led to his death.

John Edwards, aged 82 died of severe burns two weeks after the blaze at a property in Holyhead Road on May 11 last year. His wife Doreen and son Mark were also badly injured in the blaze.

Andrew Gorrell, aged 54, of Saltney in Flintshire, Wales, is accused of starting the fire deliberately. Gorrell is on trial at Wolverhampton Crown Court for the murder of Mr Edwards and also the attempted murders of Mrs Edwards and his sons Mark Edwards and Carl Edwards.

He has admitted a lesser charge of manslaughter against John Edwards.

The fourth day of the trial heard evidence from Dr Brett Lockyer, a Home Office pathologist who examined Mr Edwards's body in the wake of his death and first noted "extensive" burn injuries to the top of his head, as well as a "thick burn" on the left side of his face and ear, nose and down to his chest.
