The acting chief constable of West Midlands Police today apologised for its handling of the force's decision to ban supporters of Maccabi Tel Aviv for a game against Aston Villa

Scott Green told today’s meeting of the force's accountability and governance board that the decision had damaged relations between police and the Jewish community.

"Our response to criticisms of the force, and our reaction to the Home Secretary's statement to parliament was too defensive," he said.

Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood said the affair had caused her to lose confidence in then Chief Constable Craig Guildford,  who has since retired.
