Three men charged following attempted theft of underground cables in Birmingham

Three men have been charged with stealing communication cables worth up to £50,000 from under the street in Birmingham.

Marian Agarlita, Sorin Condrache and Aldafin Peunaru have all been charged with metal theft after being arrested on Great Charles Queensway in Birmingham on Tuesday evening.

The three men were due to appear in court on Thursday and have been remanded in custody.

A spokesman for West Midlands Police said: "We’ve charged three men with a £50,000 metal theft after members of the public alerted us to a gang of suspected thieves stealing cables under the street in Birmingham city centre.

"Marian Agarlita, 37, Sorin Condrache, 45, and Aldafin Peunaru, 48, are all accused of stealing communication cables with a value of around £50,000.

"They were due to appear before city magistrates today after being charged and remanded in custody overnight.

"Firearms officers who were patrolling nearby were flagged down by members of the public as a group of men were trying to steal cables on Great Charles Queensway at around 7.30pm on Tuesday.

"A van carrying cables was also recovered."
