Officers from West Midlands Police said they spotted the man in a car driving double the speed limit in Rowley Regis on Wednesday night, then speeding off and leading the officers in a high speed chase before crashing on Church Road.

The force said the man then attempted to flee the scene, only to be caught a short distance away and arrested and taken into custody, where the force said he currently remains.

A spokesman for West Midlands Police said: "A man has spent the night in custody after officers spotted a car driving double the speed limit and dangerously in Sandwell.

"Our traffic unit were out on patrol on Wednesday night when they spotted an Audi driving at speed in Rowley Regis.

"Failing to stop for officers the car carried on driving dangerously, hitting double the speed limit, and ignoring traffic lights before it crashed on Church Road.

"Attempting to evade the team a man then fled the scene on foot but was no match for the officers as they caught up with him a short distance away and made an arrest shortly before 12.45am today.

"A 23-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving, theft of motor vehicle and no insurance.

"He remains in custody while our enquiries continue."
