Mary Law, a retired chiropodist, claims she was approached by at least two women while shopping for pet food in Dudley's Churchill Shopping Centre, on December 11.

"I was ambushed by two people on the Thursday about two weeks before Christmas Day while I was shopping for cat food. Some people came and stood near me while I was standing there. Some items fell off the shelf and while I was distracted with picking them up, I moved my hand from my bag.

"When I turned away from the shelf I noticed that the bag's zip was open and my purse was gone. I reported it to the police. Fortunately I had already frozen my bank card so they couldn't use it to buy anything. But I had some cash for my Christmas shopping which went. I think I was targeted," Mrs Law said.

West Midlands Police confirmed the theft had been reported to officers.

A spokesman said: "We received a report of a purse being stolen from a victim who was shopping at a store in Churchill Shopping Centre on 11 December between midday and 12.30pm. We’d ask anyone with any information to get in touch with us."
