A man, aged 40, has been jailed after stealing alcohol from a supermarket in Sandwell and assaulting a security guard

A man has been jailed after assaulting a security worker and stealing items from a Tipton supermarket.

On 5 January, Stefan Baker, aged 40 stole alcohol from a supermarket on Brickhouse Lane.

He was then challenged by security after walking past all payment tills.

Security staff recovered the alcohol and attempted to obtain his details. However, Baker became aggressive and assaulted the security worker. He punched staff multiple times.

Officers responded and he was arrested on suspicion of assault and shop theft. Consequently, he was charged and admitted offences at an earlier hearing.

Baker of Witton Road appeared at Wolverhampton Magistrates Court and was sentenced to 16 weeks in prison.

A spokesperson for West Midlands Police said: “We’re catching hundreds more suspected shop thieves in the West Midlands as we continue to act against retail crime across the region.

“Please report any incidents of retail crime by calling 101. Always call 999 in an emergency.”
