Police called to fire in high-rise flats near Great Barr find cannabis farm

Police responding to a fire in a block of flats in the West Midlands found a cannabis farm with more than a dozen plants in the flat next to the one where the fire was found.

The officers made the discovery while searching a block of flats in Hamstead, near Great Barr, early this morning after a fire broke out in the building.

West Midlands Fire Service, West Midlands Police and West Midlands Ambulance Service personnel attended Hamstead House in Coniston Crescent in Hamstead, near Great Barr, soon after 6am. The fire originated in a ninth-storey flat in the 11-storey building.

Thankfully no injuries were reported - but on searching the building officers discovered a cannabis grow.

A West Midlands Police spokesperson said: "We were called to assist West Midlands Fire Service after a fire at a block of flats in Coniston Crescent shortly before 6.30am today.

"While carrying out searches, a cannabis farm containing 16 plants was found inside an adjacent flat.
