The force carried out operations last month including roadside checks and multi-agency road safety operations, acting on information provided by the public.

Over the course of December, 314 people were arrested for drink or drug driving offences across the West Midlands - including professional drivers, delivery drivers, community care workers and mechanics.

This equated to a 15 per cent increase from the force's last similar campaign in 2024.

Police also seized more than 7,000 vehicles for having no insurance across 2025.

Superintendent Jack Hadley, head of the Roads Policing Unit at West Midlands Police, said: "There is no excuse to ever get behind the wheel while under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

"The devastating impact on other drivers, pedestrians and the life-changing consequences should be a strong enough reason not to drive under the influence.

"Unfortunately, these figures show that people are still willing to get behind the wheel and put other people’s lives at risk. This is why these operations are so important.

"This may have been our festive campaign, but it's important to stress we're carrying out activity day in, day out, to keep the West Midlands roads safe. But we can’t do this alone.

“If you suspect someone of driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs. Report them. You can do this anonymously, and it could end up saving lives.

“With the announcement of the new Road Safety Strategy, we want to reinforce our commitment to road safety.

“We will continue to work with our communities and partners, including local councils, charities and transport for the West Midlands to create safer roads for everyone."
