Man, 22, jailed after woman died in Oldbury hit-and-run

A man has been jailed after a woman in her 50s died following a collision in Oldbury.

Just before 9.20pm on Wednesday, August 6, the 54-year-old woman was walking along the pavement on Birmingham Road, Oldbury before she crossed the road and was hit by a red Vauxhall Astra.

The driver of the Vauxhall Astra was travelling at more than 70mph on a 40mph speed limit road.

Despite the best efforts of paramedics, the woman was pronounced dead at the scene.

After fleeing the scene, the driver then returned and was arrested.

Muazzam Luqman, aged 22 of Blakeley Hall Road, Oldbury was consequently charged with causing death by dangerous driving.

He admitted the offence at an earlier hearing and was sentenced to six years in prison at Wolverhampton Crown Court.

DS Julie Lyman from Serious Collision Investigation Unit said: “Luqman disregarded the speed limit, which cost an innocent woman her life. He will now spend years behind bars and is disqualified from driving for eight years.

“Our thoughts remain with the victim’s loved ones.”
