West Midlands Police has confirmed that a 16-year-old boy was arrested and later charged with possession of a firework and throwing a firework into a highway.

The force said he would appear before Birmingham Magistrates court later this month, while a 15-year-old boy who was arrested for setting off a firework in a public place has been released on police bail pending further enquiries.

A spokesman for West Midlands Police said: "We had extra officers in the city centre following reports that a number of young people were involved in anti-social behaviour.

"This kind of behaviour will not be tolerated in Birmingham or anywhere in the West Midlands.

"As ever, our focus is on keeping the city centre safe and welcoming for everyone. We will have an increased police presence in the city this weekend to reassure the public.

"We would urge anyone with concerns to speak to officers or if they wish to report a crime, call us on 101.

"Always call 999 in an emergency."
