West Midlands Police haz said that the force is 'deeply saddened' to hear of the passing of one of their loyal former police dogs, 'Stark', who passed away following a short illness.

The eight-year-old German Shepherd retired earlier this year during an announcement at Crufts, ending six years of service to the force, and his work in keeping members of the community safe.

With his dedicated handler, Paul Hopley, Stark passed his initial training in 2019 and pounced straight into his first shift, quickly finding a car thief hiding in a series of bushes, before going on to pass firearms training with his handler in 2021.

Over the years, Stark has been a fan favourite while out on patrols and during his appearances at Crufts, being repeatedly recognised for his incredible work and bravery in the face of danger.

In 2022, Stark was given a national award for his bravery when he was attacked with a machete in 2020.

Despite the attack, he was quick to jump back into his work, being back on patrol with his partner within months, and on his first shift back, found a criminal who was attempting to hide from officers.

Following his retirement, Stark went to live comfortably with Paul and his wife, Michelle, where they were seen as inseparable.

Mr Hopley said: "Stark meant the world to both me and Michelle. He was a fantastic police dog who was highly driven, fearless, and a protector of everyone.

"It has been an honour being his handler. He made me immensely proud every single day, and I'm thankful we got to enjoy our retirement together.

"He will leave a huge paw shaped hole in our hearts."
