West Midlands Police has said that the powers, which allow officers to stop and search people without the need to have reasonable grounds, were put in place at 3pm on Friday and will be in force across Birmingham city centre until 6am on Saturday morning.

The Section 60 has been put in place following incidents of disorder involving fireworks in the New Street area, Dale End area and Staniforth Street., with 19 people charged with a range of offences such as assaulting police and public order following disorder on Wednesday evening.

The force said groups had also launched fireworks in the street and from buildings, with some aiming towards police officers and police vehicles and said it was working to respond to anti-social behaviour such as this.

A spokesman for West Midlands Police said: "We will be using section 60 powers in Birmingham city centre on Friday following disorder involving fireworks.

"We won't tolerate such appalling behaviour which we know is frightening for people and puts them at risk of harm.

"The safety of our communities is paramount and we'll do all we can to ensure this.

"Misusing fireworks is not only dangerous: it’s illegal. Throwing fireworks in public places, targeting people or property, or causing distress can lead to fines, arrest and criminal charges.

"We’re working closely with local partners to respond to reports of anti-social behaviour (ASB) and keep our communities safe.

"If you witness fireworks being misused or any other form of ASB, you can report it to us, by calling 101 for non-emergencies, reporting to us online and always calling 999 in an emergency or if someone is in immediate danger."
