Four men have been fatally attacked in recent weeks: two in Leicester Street on September 19, one in a car park near Phoenix Park on October 21, and most recently one in Lilleshall Crescent on Saturday (October 25).

Wolverhampton residents speaking to the Express & Star after the most recent death said "enough is enough", and West Midlands Police has today (Monday) vowed to increase the number of officers on the streets in a bid to crack down on violent crime in the city.

In a statement following the shooting of 30-year-old Jermaine Smith in Lilleshall Crescent on Saturday, the force said: "It’s a real concern for us, as we know it is for you. We understand and are acutely aware of how incidents like this make you feel.

"We’re focusing on suppression, investigations and community engagement.

"You will therefore see more officers - both armed and unarmed - on the streets."

A West Midlands Police spokesman added that while the force was unable to provide an exact timescale on when the extra officers would be deployed, they said it would be "as soon as possible".
