Robbery suspect arrested in Sandwell 'within an hour' of a 999 call to police

A man has been arrested in Sandwell on suspicion of robbery within hours of police officers receiving a 999 call alerting them to an assault.

West Midlands Police has said that a 29-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of robbery after they received reports of car doors being tried in Sandwell and a victim being punched in the face.

Police responded to Stonehouse Crescent, Wednesbury, at around 5.50pm yesterday to reports that a man was seen trying car door handles on the street, and after finding a car unlocked, a number of items were taken.

After confronting a man, a victim was punched in the face, before the man ran off from the scene. 

Upon searching the area, the suspect was found and then arrested only an hour later by the Sandwell response team. 

He remains in custody while police enquiries continue. 

A force spokesperson said: "We were called to Stonehouse Crescent at around 5.50pm yesterday to reports that a man was seen trying car door handles on the street, and after finding a car unlocked, several items had been taken.

"Following a confrontation, the victim was punched in their face, before a man ran off from the scene. The suspect was found and arrested just an hour later by the Sandwell response team."
