Prolific shoplifter crashed car during police chase after driving wrong way round a Wolverhampton roundabout

A prolific Wolverhampton shoplifter has been sentenced for more than 30 thefts and driving dangerously when he crashed a car whilst being chased by police.

Luke Wigley, 25, and of Wiley Road, Wolverhampton, pleaded guilty to one count of dangerous driving from 2021, eight thefts in April this year and 18 thefts in July and August this year. He also was guilty of breaching a suspended sentence order for six thefts.

Wigley was sentenced at Wolverhampton Crown Court via video link from HMP Birmingham where he was being held on remand.

Prosecuting, Edward Soulsby said: "On February 10, 2021 when blue-lighted in a Renault Megane he tried to outrun a police car by driving the wrong way round a roundabout on the Wolverhampton Road.

"He mounted the pavement to avoid the police car, which he damaged. Whilst waiting sentence he went on two shoplifting sprees."

He added: "In April this year, days after being given a suspended sentence [Wigley committed] eight offences targeting Greggs and Heron Foods totalling £192 worth of goods being stolen.
