The 14-year-old was found with serious knife wounds in Brunel Road, in Oldbury, on January 4. A 15-year-old defendant is standing trial for attempting to kill him.

On Tuesday the jury at Wolverhampton Crown Court was told that the victim was in a coma following the incident, but that detectives leading the investigation were able to speak when he woke up in hospital.

The jury was told that the victim was at first reluctant to hand over his mobile phone so that West Midlands Police could download the text messages due to the length of time it would take, but when he was given assurances that the process would be shortened he initially agreed.
