Mattu, aged 50, of Swan Crescent, Oldbury spoke through an interpreter and to confirm his name and his plea.

He was provisionally due to stand trial on November 17, but the matter will now be heard in the new year due to a date clash with a different and "long-running murder trial".

Addressing the defendant Judge Michael Chambers KC said: "Your case is being adjourned for trial on a date that we will need to fix. We will try to do that as soon as possible. I am required to tell you that if you choose not to attend your trial, you run the risk that it may proceed in your absence.

"You must remain in custody."
