Mitchell Downes, 33, of no fixed address, has been sentenced to five months in prison after officers discovered a five-inch knife on his person.

It comes after PCSOs from the Wednesbury neighbourhood policing team were out patrolling along Old Park Road, just after 10am on August 3, when they came across Downes, who was already wanted on recall to prison.

Noticing him, officers stopped Downes and waited for local PCs to attend.

Officers then searched the 33-year-old and found him to be in possession of a five-inch knife inside a bag.

Downes was arrested on the spot by officers, who took him into custody.

The 33-year-old appeared at Birmingham Magistrates Court on August 4, charged with possession of a knife, a pointed article in public space.

After pleading guilty, he was sentenced to five months in prison and ordered to pay a £154 fine.

A West Midlands Police spokesperson said: "We take knife crime and carrying a weapon seriously.

"If you know someone who is carrying a weapon, please call us on 101 to report. You can also talk to us online or report anonymously to Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111."
