It is easy to think senior police officers in the West Midlands and elsewhere are hardened to killings and serious crime that goes on across the region - seemingly on a day-to-day basis.

But Sandwell's local policing commander and knife crime lead for the West Midlands force, chief superintendent Kim Madill, was visibly shaken when she spoke of the death of Isaac Brown at the school in Wednesbury - Wodensborough Ormiston Academy - the 15-year-old attended.

She addressed pupils and the media in January - the day before Reehan Nezir and a 14-year-old who can't be named for legal reasons were first due to be sentenced over the killing. Yesterday (July 31) they were finally locked up for more than 13 years between them for the manslaughter of Isaac.

Kim Madill called hers "the best job in the world' but she said it nevertheless meant facing many traumatic incidents every day, most of which she said were a "privilege" to deal with but which also had a massive effect on officers.
