Masked burglar 'battered 94-year-old pensioner' in his Wolverhampton home, murder trial told
A 94-year-old Wolverhampton man died after being battered in his own home by a burglar searching for cash, a court has heard.
Harold Monk was left with multiple fractures after a masked burglar unleashed a vicious attack during the botched raid at his Bradmore home on October 3 last year, Wolverhampton Crown Court heard.
The pensioner's screams alerted a neighbour who came to his aid but he died in hospital the next day. Paul Topham was arrested near the scene and is now standing trial for the murder of Mr Monk.
Mr Monk, known as Harry, suffered rib fractures, fractures to his spine and face, as well as brain damage. However, he still managed to give police officers a statement at hospital.
The 94-year-old victim had woken up in the early hours of the morning to find the attacker dressed all in black and inside his home. The prosecution allege Topham, 45, was that attacker.
