Labour MP Adrian Bailey struck over the head during gang mugging
An MP has revealed he was mugged by a gang of thugs who struck him on the head with a milk container.
Adrian Bailey says robbers made off with his wallet and mobile phone when he was attacked on his way home from Westminster at around 10pm last night.
According to the Labour MP for West Bromwich West, he was near to his flat in Southwark, south London, when he was approached by a gang of up to six assailants who attacked him from 'all sides'.
Mr Bailey, aged 72, said that he was 'boxed in' and knocked to the ground. During the tussle he says he received 'a number of blows' and was hit over the head with a large plastic milk container.
The gang made off with his wallet and phone before he was able to report the attack to the police.
The Met has launched an investigation into the incident.
Mr Bailey said did not require hospital treatment but was 'badly shaken up' and suffered 'bumps and bruises'.
He said today: “I appreciate that many other people have gone through what I went through last night and it really brought home to me the value of having bobbies on the beat to deter such attacks.
"Every member of the public deserves the right to walk about in a safe and non-threatening environment.
“The Metropolitan Police response has been excellent and they are working hard with me to identify the perpetrators of this attack.
"I would like to thank the Metropolitan Police for their immediate response and the kind support they are giving me in dealing with this issue.”
