Jeremiah Regis: Mother admits 'allowing death of son' found with more than 100 injuries

Jeremiah Regis was pronounced dead after being taken to hospital from a flat in High Street, Wednesfield, last November.

At Wolverhampton Crown Court on Friday, his mother Sindyann Regis pleaded guilty to a charge that she had not taken sufficient steps to prevent the youngster's death.

Paramedics were called to the flat overlooking Wednesfield High Street where little Jeremiah was found with injuries to his head and body.

A post-mortem examination showed the toddler died of abdominal peritonitis caused by blunt force trauma.

Regis spoke to confirm her name and to enter her plea during a hearing lasting around half an hour.

Wearing a black dress, she showed no emotion as she pleaded guilty to the charge in connection with the death of her son.

The wording of the charge stated Regis was a 'member of the household' who was or 'ought to have been aware' that Jeremiah was in danger and 'failed to take steps to protect' him.

She has denied a separate charge of murder.

Wolverhampton Safeguarding Children Board has confirmed it will be carrying out a serious case review into Jeremiah's death, as is standard practice.

The boy was discovered by medics at his home shortly before midnight on Sunday, November 20.

He was taken to New Cross Hospital where he was pronounced dead and a murder investigation was subsequently launched.

An inquest heard an autopsy showed 'multiple injuries of varying age to many areas of the body's surface' and that 'fresh injuries' suggested 'blunt impact or use of a weapon'.

Neighbours and workers at the High Street shops who would regularly see Jeremiah with his mother told of their shock on learning of his death.

He was described as a 'lovely, smiley little boy'.

His stepfather Chevaze McGregor, aged 27, denies murder and cruelty by wilfully assaulting three other children.

The pair are due to stand trial on June 6. Regis was remanded in custody until then.
