The 19-year-old is alleged to have presented fake documents claiming his mother had been killed on the island, off Tanzania on the East African coast.

But after their insurance firm grew suspicious of the documents, they refused to pay out and contacted police.

The son has now been arrested.

The woman, 45, is said to have been living in Canada and was asked to return to the UK by police.

She was arrested at Perry Barr Police Station on her return.

A 24-year-old has also been interviews under caution in connection with the alleged plot. The mother and son have been bailed until April.

City of London Police said the case involved an allegedly faked death certificate and road traffic accident reports to claim on the mother's life insurance in May last year.
