The man entered the Co-operative, Brewood, at about 5.55am yesterday before stealing £700 in cash and cigarettes.

He left through a back door at the Market Place store and rode off on a motorbike.

Staff were shocked, but were left unhurt.

The store was closed for a time in the morning, but had reopened by the afternoon. Mid-Counties Co-op is helping police with their inquiries.

The man was wearing a balaclava, black clothing, a grey saggy beanie hat, a high visibility jacket and had thick woolly socks over his footwear.

His face was covered by the balaclava, but his eyes were described by staff as piercing.

A Staffordshire Police spokesman said: "CCTV is now being studied and forensic examination of the scene is underway as our officers continue their inquiries."

Meanwhile, another burglary was also reported to police yesterday after a man stole two safes containing a substantial amount of money from the Lion Hotel, which is next door to the supermarket, at about 10.30pm on Wednesday. Police said they were not treating the incidents as linked.

A villager, who wanted to remain anonymous, said: "I went for my paper probably at about 10.30am and it was closed. They have it at those places all the time. A few months ago they had it down in the Spar."

A woman, who also did not wish to be named, said: "I came to work at 9.30am and a police car was there and there were a few people outside. I think it might be because Brewood is close to the M6. A sleepy little village is not such a sleepy little village."

The robbery comes just two months after a raid at the village's Spar, on Stafford Street. Three men targeted the store before being driven off in a dark saloon type car by a fourth man on October 27. Police have yet to make any arrests.

Anyone with information about yesterday's robbery is asked to contact Staffordshire Police on 101 and refer to incident number 84 of December 29.

People who have any information are being asked to quote incident number 151 of December 28.
