Violence flared outside the Brunswick Arms in Wednesbury when the three returned armed with the weapons following an earlier row, Wolverhampton Crown Court heard.

Philip Jones was beaten unconscious as he was struck with the hammer, after being sprayed with CS gas, and then slashed on the back of the head with the machete, said Mr Philip Beardwell, prosecuting.

His son Ross Jones raced outside from the pub carrying a snooker cue to try and fight off his father's attackers but was sliced on the upper arm with the machete, Mr Beardwell said.

Brothers Lewis and Deon Bolding, both of Vowles Road, West Bromwich, and their relative Ainsley Seales deny inflicting grievous bodily harm with intent and wounding with intent.

Seales, aged 33, of Chestnut Road, Wednesbury, also denies possession of an offensive weapon and possession of a prohibited weapon.

Lewis Bolding, 21, denies two counts of possessing an offensive weapon.

On the first day of the trial, Mr Beardwell told the jury Philip and Ross Jones had been celebrating Christmas at the pub with other members of their family.

He said Philip Jones and Lewis Bolding had a 'disagreement' which was heated but did not become violent at that stage.

A short time later, Seales arrived at the Crankhall Lane pub and had 'words' with Philip Jones, he said.

He then left before returning with Lewis and Deon Bolding, 24, in his white BMW to launch their attack on the father, the jury heard.

Seales was holding the machete and Lewis Bolding the hammer, it is alleged.

Mr Beardwell told the court: "The three, led by Ainsley Seales, approached Philip Jones. The first thing he (Seales) did was pull out the CS spray, not getting him but near enough for his eyes to start to feel swollen. He was hit repeatedly with the claw hammer, kicked and punched, with his clothes pulled over him so he couldn't see anything, and knocked unconscious.

The trial continues.
