Sunil Kumar attacked Kris Grzegowski and his terrified family with a two foot iron bar as they sat in their car outside the properties, Wolverhampton Crown Court was told.

The 21-year-old rained down blows on the roof of the vehicle and shattered the windscreen, showering the occupants, who included two small children, with broken glass.

Then he tried to hit Mr Grzegowski over the head through the half open driver's window, breaking the left arm of the victim, explained Mr Mark Phillips, prosecuting.

The victim's partner, Miss Poppy Mansell-Reisnall, pleaded for the attacker to stop.

Kumar, who also deliberately intimidated them by swerving at the couple as their cars passed on June 16, was jailed for two and a half years.

The trouble started as the families confronted each other outside their homes in Holly Lane, Smethwick, on May 1.

Mr Grzegowski spent three days in hospital and underwent an operation during which screws and pins were inserted into the damaged arm.

The injury prevented the lorry driver working for five months.

When the violence flared relations between the two families had deteriorated to such an extent that they were not on speaking terms and argued via e-mail.

Mr Phillips revealed: "The neighbours were once friends but had fallen out and feelings were running high between the two."

Mr Colin McCarragher, defending, conceded: "He completely lost his temper but there is more to this, and more to him, than just a thug with an iron bar.

"He is usually a completely different individual who is hard working and well liked but on this occasion he behaved appallingly towards the neighbours."

Kumar pleaded guilty to causing grievous bodily harm, possession of an offensive weapon, witness intimidation and criminal damage.
