She was at work when Miles Charters struck in Slatch House Road, Smethwick, but a neighbour heard the disturbance and alerted police, Wolverhampton Crown Court was told.

Officers found the front bay window had been smashed along with several other windows in the kitchen, a bedroom and thee rear door.

"There were also trails of blood all over the floor," explained Mrs Sati Ruck, prosecuting. Two hammers were found in the premises immediately after the September 6 attack.

Charters reacted aggressively to being arrested, the court heard.

The 28-year-old head-butted the Peugeot in which he was taken to a local police station for questioning. He also spat on an officer and damaged the handcuffs used to restrain him by biting the plastic casing.

The defendant had previous convictions for hitting a person with a meat clever, threatening others on another occasion with a ceremonial sword and numerous offences of criminal damage.

Charters told the court he suffered from depression and drank to 'self-medicate.' He continued: "There is no excuse for my actions. I am not a bad person but my emotions boil over.

"I want to apologise to the police officers concerned. They have a hard enough job as it is without having to deal with drunken idiots like me." His mother estimated the damage to her house at around £2,000.

Mr Simon Williams, defending, said: "He has never had a relationship with his mother and was sent to live with his grandparents. He is an intelligent but troubled man. Prison will punish him but not deal with his demons."

Charters, of no fixed address, pleaded guilty to burglary, destroying property and assaulting a police constable.

He was sent to prison by Judge Stephen Ward who told him:"You have a terrible criminal record. Some of that, no doubt, is as a result of your upbringing but I do not understand why this incident happened.

"For whatever reason you broke into your mother's house and created a scene that must have upset her greatly. I do not view this as a burglary. In my view it was a personal attack on your mother."
