Awards for police who fought to save shot businessman Akhtar Javeed
Police officers who fought to save a man's life after he was shot in a botched warehouse raid are to receive top awards.
Akhtar Javeed, 56, was gunned down in the horror incident at Direct Source 3 fast food warehouse, on Rea Street, in Digbeth, on February 3.
Mr Javeed was shot in the leg as a warning to open the businesses safe. He was later shot in the mouth and throat as well.
Police sergeants Julie Kempson and Richard Nutt and PC Matthew Moore sprang into action.
Despite their efforts, Mr Javeed, who received gunshots to his leg and head, died later in hospital. The three officers have been awarded Royal Humane Society resuscitation certificates for their fight to save his life.
The three officers have also been personally praised by Royal Humane Society secretary, Dick Wilkinson.
He said they had given Mr Javeed the best chance of surviving the attack.
Mr Wilkinson said: "It was a horrific incident.
"When the officers arrived on the scene they found Mr Javeed, who owns the business suffering from the gunshot wounds.
"They immediately began to administer first aid and took turns for a considerable time administering cardiac pulmonary resuscitation.
"PC Moore also drove the ambulance to hospital to enable paramedics to work together on him during the journey.
"Despite all their valiant efforts to save him he died but they cannot be praised highly enough for their fight to save him.
"They have him the best possible chance of survival. Sadly it didn't succeed but no-one could have done more.
"They richly deserve the awards they are to receive."
West Midlands Police put forward the three officers for the humane society recommendation.
No date has yet been fixed for presentation of the awards but it is expected to take place in the near future.
The police in their recommendation said that the paramedics had praised the efforts of the police.
It added that Mr Javeed's family have asked to meet them to thank the officers for their efforts to save him.
