A woman has been arrested after a video showing a young boy being subjected to a torrent of foul-mouthed abuse at a Wolverhampton city centre bus stop was viewed thousands of times.

The clip, lasting just over two minutes, was filmed opposite Wolverhampton's Grand Theatre earlier this month.

The woman, who is carrying a can of drink, approaches people waiting at the Lichfield Street stop, and appears to focus initially on a woman with a young boy.

As the shouting continues, the boy's guardian escorts him away before he appears to start crying. She walks after the pair and continues to swear.

She urges passers-by to 'mind their own business', asking one who appears to try to intervene: 'Do you want to fight me?'

At one point the woman in the video says, "Sorry I don't mean to swear but somebody upset me today."

She later claims that someone had stolen her purse from her house the previous night, and repeatedly apologises for swearing.

Today, a spokesman for West Midlands Police said: "A 47-year-old woman has been arrested on suspicion of a public order offence after a video showing a woman and a young boy being harassed was shared widely on social media.

"The woman from Compton was arrested today and is currently in police custody helping officers with their inquiries."

The video has been viewed more than 16,000 times on YouTube.

Her case was heard at Wolverhampton Magistrates Court today charged with public order offence. The court heard she was being transferred to Penn Hospital, and it was likely she would be sectioned under the Mental Health Act.
