Unemployed Stella Downing, aged 37 and of no fixed address, and labourer Martin Stokes, aged 49 from St Giles Road, Willenhall, appeared before Wolverhampton magistrates today.

They were remanded in custody until a further hearing on Monday at the city's crown court.

Mr Evans, 56, was pronounced dead at an address on Walsall Street on Monday at around 8.30pm

Police were called by paramedics, and a post-mortem was being held today.

West Midlands Police Detective Inspector Jim Munro said: "The body was discovered at 8.30pm following a call from a member of the public but we believe the man may have been dead for several hours.

"We've already spoken to many residents in Walsall Street but if anyone was in the area on Monday evening, and have not yet spoken to police, then I'd ask them to call me as soon as possible.

"It may be they saw or heard something suspicious, perhaps a disturbance or people leaving the scene, that could be important to the investigation."

Willenhall South Councillor Carl Creaney said: "It's a tragedy. It's a good friend of mine I've known for a long long time, well over 20 odd years. What's happened to him shouldn't have happened to him.

"My heart goes out to his ex-wife and his children. It's dreadful news."

Friend Karl Bond added: "Glynn was a great bloke. He had his troubles like we all do, but his heart was in the right place.

"He would always help others where he could and he will be dearly missed by many.

"He was never short of friends to help him out in his times of need. I personally gave him a roof a few times and bags of clothes and money when he was hungry.

"It's a sad loss to our community."
