Ciortan Florin and Sebastian Maties, both 21, were arrested in West Bromwich town centre after a Ford Fiesta was broken into on Astle Retail Park.

They had been acting suspiciously in the area and Florin was spotted taking a black bag and a phone out of the Fiesta's boot.

Patrolling police arrested the pair on suspicion of theft and found they had a tool for breaking into cars

In interview, it emerged they had only arrived in the UK from Romania the day before.

Both men were jailed for 14 days after admitting theft from a motor vehicle when they appeared before Sandwell Magistrates Court. They will be returned to Romania after their release.

Insp Akeel Najib, from Sandwell Police, said: "These men could not have been in Sandwell for long at all before they began to commit crime.

"Everything we uncovered during our inquiry leads us to believe that the pair came to the UK with the sole intention of going on a crime spree before returning home.

"At the time of arrest we found a device which would open the doors of locked vehicles, leading us to believe that the men would have gone on to commit further offences had they not have been stopped."
