Boxers in court on Cannock town centre attack charge

Two boxers have appeared in court in connection with a serious assault on a 20-year-old man in Cannock that left him with severe head injuries.

Alistair Douglas and James Robb both faced a charge of intent to cause grievous bodily harm to Joshua Morgan when they appeared at Cannock Magistrates Court yesterday.

The pair are both boxers and train at Great Wyrley Boxing Club, the court was told.

Mr Morgan is still in a critical condition in hospital after the attack. It happened in Cannock town centre in the early hours of on Sunday.

Police cordoned off an area of Backcroft, at the back of Poundland, after paramedics were called to the scene at around 2.05am.

Douglas, aged 24 and Robb, 21, gave no pleas when they appeared at court.

Miss Maggie Meakin, prosecuting, told the court that the victim Mr Morgan remains in a critical condition at the University Hospital of North Staffordshire in Stoke.

Douglas, of Longford Road, and Robb, of Langdale Green, both Cannock, were both denied bail.

The magistrates committed the case to Stafford Crown Court where they will next appear on March 31.

A full forensic investigation of the scene in Cannock took place and CCTV evidence is still being scoured by detectives.

Mr Morgan's family is thought to run vintage interiors shop A Little Bit of Blighty in Mill Street.

Proprietor Clare Simpson wrote on her business Facebook page: "Some of you may of heard about a young man being attacked in Cannock and left in a critical condition. That man was my baby. At present I am not going to move from his side so please be patient with us."

Two other men were arrested in connection with the attack and have been bailed by police.
