The 16-year-old, who cannot be named due to legal reasons, left the schoolgirl with a 4.5cm deep wound to her back during the attack outside Bloxwich Leisure Centre, Walsall Magistrates Court heard.

She was taken to hospital and treated with a 'surgical wound closure', Mrs Jenny Winzor, prosecuting, said.

She said the girl, who had been with her cousin and a friend, was chased and caught by the 16-year-old after he spotted her in the street.

Mrs Winzor said she had felt a 'blow' to her back, followed by shooting pains and felt a 'warm trickle' running down her body. The court heard that the 16-year-old then ran home and told his uncle: "I've stabbed her", but added: "I didn't mean to."

His uncle went to Bloxwich Leisure Centre after being told that was where the girl was and he told police who had been responsible for the attack. Officers later tracked the youth down at a pub.

Mrs Winzor said the girl, who had been in a relationship with the 16-year-old for six months, was taken to Birmingham Children's Hospital.

She was treated for a 4.5cm deep wound to her back, but has been left with a scar.

"The injury was treated with surgical wound closure," Mrs Winzor said.

She said the teenager told police he thought she had been cheating on him, but had only meant to punch her. He claimed he had keys in his hand at the time which had been responsible for the injury.

Mrs Winzor told the court that an application would be made for a restraining order. The youth, who lives in the Walsall area, wore a suit to court and admitted wounding the girl on November 15 last year.

In mitigation, Mr Sukhdip Randhawa said he had made full and frank admissions and had taken responsibility for his actions.

The case was adjourned for a pre-sentence report. The youth is due to be sentenced at Walsall Magistrates Court on March 7 and he was given conditional bail.
