Seela Kaur, who is separated from murder-accused Jagdev Singh Rai, yesterday told Wolverhampton Crown Court that he didn't consult her about the name change.
In June 2006 Rai, of Salisbury Road, West Bromwich, changed his name by deed poll to Jasbir Singh Bains – the name of his alleged victim.
Mr Bains was found dead in Dartmouth Park, West Bromwich, in November, 2012.
Rai, aged 44, is accused of using Mr Bains' name without his knowledge to set up a life insurance policy worth £318,913, and obtaining a £56,703 mortgage for a property. Rai denies murder.
The trial continues.
