Railings went through the front of the Mercedes Sprinter van and passed just inches from the driver's seat in the smash along the Keyway in Willenhall.

The driver fled the scene and Arvinder Kandola was arrested near his home soon after, Walsall Magistrates Court was told.

His eyes were glazed and he appeared unsteady on his feet according to officers.

Kandola recorded an initial breath test of 88 microgrammes of alcohol in 100 milliltres of breath. The legal limit is 35.

However, the 25 year-old, of Uplands Road, Willenhall, failed to provide a second recording meaning the test was incomplete. He pleaded guilty to failing to provide a specimen for analysis.

Miss Rachael Smith, prosecuting, said the collision happened at around 11.30pm on October 22. The vehicle was found 'embedded in the railings'.

Miss Hina Paw, defending, said her client had made efforts to provide a second recording but it would not pick up. Kandola was disqualified for 20 months and ordered to pay a court bill of £275.
