The raiders, who were in a stolen 7.5 ton wagon with false number plates, eventually abandoned the vehicle on the M6.

They were seen earlier filling up with diesel at a service station in Stoke-on-Trent.

The gang drove into a Staffordshire Police dog van as they made off without paying.

Police are still looking for three men in the Keele area.
