Police probe suspected Wolverhampton shooting as roads sealed off

Police cordoned off Qualcast Road in Horseley Fields just outside the city centre, shortly after 4am.

A car at the scene was found to have been damaged by gunshots. Three people who were in the vehicle, two men and a woman, are being spoken to by officers.

An area of nearby St James Street, is also being investigating as a potential crime scene after being linked to the shooting and was cordoned off by officers.

There have been no reports of anyone being injured. Residents living nearby today spoke of their shock at what had happened.

West Midlands Police spokeswoman Deb Edmonds said: "Detectives are investigating a suspected shooting in Wolverhampton in the early hours of this morning.

"Police cordoned off an area of Qualcast Road shortly after 4am today after a car was found to have been damaged as a result of gunshots.

"Three people who were in the vehicle, two men and a woman, are being spoken to by officers.

Janet Eccleston, who lives on Walsall Street at the junction with St James Street, said she heard a gunshot shortly after 3am this morning.

The 44-year-old said: "I thought, 'I am sure that was a shooting sound."

She claimed her 16-year-old son had seen from the bathroom window a man throw what he believed to be a gun into a nearby bushes before fleeing.

And she added: "There were fireworks going on but you can hear the difference."
