Arrest after armed police called to Norton Canes
Armed police swooped on a village in Staffordshire after a man allegedly threatened a member of the public with a weapon.
A police helicopter and Staffordshire Police's dog support unit were called out to help search for the suspect, who was said to have made the threat in Norton Canes at around 2pm yesterday.
Part of Norton East Road was closed off as they hunted for the man. A 45-year-old man was eventually arrested in the Hednesford Road area at around 7pm.
The helicopter was seen hovering above nearby Chasewater Country Park while police cars gathered in the area including near to the One Stop store and Victoria Club. There were reports he was armed with a weapon but police said the man arrested was not carrying anything.
Shift manager Jan Loat, from One Stop, said: "The road was blocked off, there was a police helicopter and about five police cars. Everyone was coming in and saying have you heard about what has gone."
Resident Alan Martin, aged 58, added: "It was quite dramatic with all the police activity and the helicopter flying above."
People took to Twitter as the police search intensified. Police in Cannock updated members of the public online.
The suspect was being interviewed by officers today.
