West Bromwich man jailed after killing sister-in-law
A violent husband who killed his sister-in-law as she tried to rescue his wife from their abusive relationship has been jailed for 10 years.
Polish national Piotr Naja killed his wife's sister Beata Hauser with a blow to the head, after she travelled to the country to try to help her.
He was found guilty of her manslaughter after a trial earlier this year, as well as the assault of his wife during the same incident. And yesterday Judge John Warner sentenced him.
The 33-year-old was given nine years in prison for Beata's manslaughter and another year in jail for the assault.
Naja, of High Street, West Bromwich, showed no emotion and simply bowed his head as the judge handed him his sentence.
He was also given a restraining order preventing him from having any contact with his wife Ewa.
Naja landed the fatal blow during a row after a party on May 12 last year, when he discovered Miss Hauser's plan to take his wife back to their native country.
She came to the UK under the guise of being a babysitter after finding out about the couple's abusive relationship while talking over the internet.
During the incident Beata suffered bleeding under the membrane that protects the brain, a fracture of the right eye socket and disassociation of the nasal bones resulting in two black eyes.
An ambulance was called in the early hours of the following day, and Miss Hauser died in hospital on the same day. Her sister was also found to have suffered multiple bruises to her head, neck and body including a prominent black eye. The whole incident happened in front of the couple's young son.
Handing him his sentence, Judge Warner told Naja: "The simple reality is that you were violent towards your sister-in-law because you thought she was interfering with your relationship with your wife.
"In one sense she was doing just that, quite properly so, to protect her from further abuse at your hands and to prevent your young son from continuing to have to witness it. I am satisfied you have shown no remorse for what you have done.
"You had no intention to kill Beata Hauser nor cause her really serious injury, but the fact remains that a woman died as a result of your violence towards her.
"Her young child has been left without a mother. Her loss is felt greatly by her family."
