Growers at Armitage's Plum Pudding site arrived to find sheds broken in to, mini-stoves stolen and wellies speared by pitchforks.

Member of Armitage and Handsacre Allotments Paul Boston said it was "upsetting and unnecessary". He revealed eight sheds had been broken in to and a fence damaged.

Mr Boston, aged 66, said: "It happened over Saturday night and we found it on Sunday. We can't work out why it is being done. It happened in January too. We don't know if it is teenagers or someone that is angry as there are sheds on the site."

Fellow grower, retired sales director John Rowland, aged 67, added: "I jumped at the chance to get this site when it opened two years ago. My fencing was damaged this time round. What I don't understand is that there were tools around but they weren't taken. It is just upsetting this happens. I love being able to grow my vegetables here but this is just not needed."

Mr Boston's daughter, Sally Boston-Turner, 41, said extra safety measures were now being taken, including CCTV cameras and security lights. "It is just not needed and it is such a lovely site it is a shame to let it go to this," she said.

Police said anyone with information can call theme on 101 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
