Michael Withnall took on the challenge of sleeping rough and busking in the doorway of the former River Island store on Dudley Street in Wolverhampton over two nights in December, with all proceeds raised going to the Soldiers', Sailors', and Airmen's Families Association (SSAFA) Charity.

The 38-year-old, who is well known on social media as ManLikeMike, said he had set an initial target of £500, but had been stunned by the response from the public to his challenge and spoke about the success of the challenge.

He said: "I think it was a big success as I've now received more than £5,000 in new donations, with more and more coming in over the last week.

"I never imagined I would ever raise as much as I did because I'd set the limit at £500, but it kept on growing and I've ended up raising 10 times the amount, which is just incredible.

"It was really hard and really cold, but it worked out due to the people coming to see me, from all my supporters and followers to the general public, as they were the real legends and they got me through it."

Mr Withnall said the experience had also really opened his eyes to what people living on the streets had to go through and inspiring him to do more in the future.

He said: "I went for a walk on one of the nights and I saw people lying in doorway with just a sleeping bag, whereas I had at least two or three blankets where I was sleeping.

"I saw one guy who only had his clothes to sleep in, so I ended up taking off my coat and giving it to him, so it really was an experience I'll never forget.

"I've had a lot of people approach me saying that they'd like to do it next time and raise some money, so it's a possibility and I think it's great that I've been able to inspire people."
