A popular Wolverhampton pub has shut its doors to undergo a £335,000 revamp which will see it reopen as one of Marston's Two Door Pubs featuring a lively locals' bar on one side and a family-friendly lounge on the other.

Pub company Marston's says the investment will revitalise the venue with a range of "exciting improvements to further solidify the pub as somewhere that everyone feels at home".

News of its temporary closure, on Monday October 20, comes after more than 250 regulars signed a petition to keep the ambience of the Spread Eagle the same after they discovered Marston's planned to refurbish the pub which local Stuart Russell described as "an integral part of Wednesfield, deeply embedded in the hearts of its residents as a place where people connect, share stories, and enjoy each others' company".

There were fears the venue, a popular destination for Sunday lunch, would be turned into a sports bar and attract a different clientele but Marston's has confirmed it will have something for everyone. As a Two Door Pub, a central partition will separate the two unique spaces, allowing customers to find a space where they belong.

Marston's has said the dedicated family lounge will feature extra covers and table space, thoughtfully-designed to cater to the needs of all ages and provide a welcoming space for the whole family. Guests can also enjoy a menu featuring comforting pub favourites and the popular kids’ menu will return, featuring smaller portions of pub favourites for children over five, plus a fun build-your-own option for under-fives.

The renovation will also see the creation of a brand-new bar area for locals to enjoy a pint and a bite to eat. The bar area will also be enhanced with Sky Sports, offering guests an elevated experience while retaining the pub’s warm and friendly atmosphere, a spokesperson for the pub business said.

General manager Laura Eddowes said: "We’re thrilled to share the news about the transformation of The Spread Eagle, creating a welcoming space for our community to enjoy for any occasion. From grabbing a quick drink at the bar to catching up with friends, or savouring a family meal together, there’s truly something for everyone."

During the refurbishment process, the pub will also be hiring a part-time chef.

The venue will showcase its brand new look when it reopens on November 12.

Popular offers are set to remain following the makeover such as two cocktails from £10 every day of the week - Marston's confirmed.
