Businesses on the A41 Bilston Road saw trade plummet during a six-month Midland Metro scheme to replace tram tracks in 2017.

Four firms went out of business as customers stayed away, while others saw profits slump by up to 80 per cent.

Now a lifeline has emerged after transport bosses at the West Midlands Combined Authority agreed for talks with traders over compensation at the end of the month.

Wolverhampton South East Labour MP Mr McFadden, who has campaigned for a pay out for businesses, said: "I hope something comes out of this for the traders.

"I appealed to the West Midlands Mayor on their behalf at the time the works were happening but it fell on deaf ears.

"The traders went through a very tough time and some went bust before the works were completed. I hope the West Midlands Combined Authority listens with an open mind and responds in a positive way."

The meeting is due to take place on January 29.
