Black Country Chamber reacts to Government ‘no deal’ Brexit scenarios
The chief executive of the Black Country Chamber of Commerce says the publication of the first tranche of UK Government technical notices aimed at giving businesses and consumers advice on the implications of a 'no deal' exit from the European Union was 'long overdue'.
Corin Crane said: “Although the possibility of a ‘no deal’ Brexit scenario is not in the best interests of sectors across the Black Country, business in the region will welcome communication from the Government.
"As a cChamber network, since the referendum, we have lobbied for greater clarity from Westminster. The information relayed in these technical notices are useful in parts, but long overdue.
“We are pleased to read that the Government will guarantee resources for EU-funded projects that have already received EU approval before the UK leaves the bloc. Although a range of details are bypassed in the technical notices, commitments to ensure that exporters know exactly what to do as of March 2019 in the event of a ‘no deal’ are welcomed."
Mr Crane said that now the chamber could see what ‘no deal’ looks like for a variety of industries across the Black Country, it would like to see more progress made in the negotiations, so that business could be provided with further clarity.
"The Government has refrained from releasing details on a post-Brexit immigration system which is also crucial for Black Country business planning. We hope that the government will assure Black Country businesses that their access to skilled and unskilled EU migrant labour will continue after the proposed transition period ends," he added.
