Unemployment up to 1.79m

Unemployment in Britain rose to 1.79 million in September, according to figures released today.

The number of people out of work grew by 164,000 over the previous month, the biggest rise in a single month since 1991.

The number of people claiming Job Seekers Allowance rose by 31,800 to 930,900.
