Irresponsible businesses in a Staffordshire district who allow their rubbish to be dumped will be slapped with fines if they cannot prove they got rid of it properly under tough new rules.

Cannock Chase Council plans to launch a crackdown against companies who cause litter and will make them pay for the clean-up costs. All businesses who create rubbish and waste, such as tradesmen and building firms, will have to prove their rubbish is being disposed of legally.

Those that cannot produce the necessary documentation will be issued with a £300 Fixed Penalty Notice.

Other initiatives will include the inspection of retail outlets such as supermarket and fast food car parks for litter. Litter Control Notices will be served where land is not kept to the required standard.

The initiative follows the success of a campaign in the district last year to target electrical contractors after wiring was routinely being fly-tipped.

The council sent out demands to every electrical wiring contractor to see its litter licence for disposing of the wires. Those that could not prove they had the license received a fine.

Environment Leader Councillor Tony Williams said: "We are increasingly finding quantities of tyres, building waste and tree loppings fly tipped across the district and we are determined to make those responsible pay for this crime. Businesses must prove they are disposing of all of their waste legally."

Members of the public are urged to make sure that they only use tradesmen who are licensed to carry waste.

They can check it is happening by contacting the Environment Agency on 0800 807060. Unlicensed contractors should also be reported to the Environment Agency.
