Stop and search powers extended in Birmingham as murder investigation continues

The Section 60 powers will be in place until 3am on Thursday in parts of Alum Rock and Bordesley Green.

As West Midlands Police’s investigation into the murder of a man in Hodge Hill continues, the force has extended their stop and search powers for another day.

Officers have confirmed that the Section 60 powers will be in place in parts of Alum Rock and Bordesley Green until 3am on Thursday (September 3) after a fatal stabbing in Hodge Hill on August 25.

There is an increased police presence in the area following the fatal stabbing of 34-year-old Zeshaan Shaukat last week.

So far, lots of arrests have been made in connection to the investigation and weapons have been seized as a result of officers using these powers.

Zeshaan Shaukat’s death is being treated as a targeted attack.

With the stop and search measures in place, officers said that there are increased patrols in the area and during the last 24 hours, they have stopped a vehicle in Bordesley Green and recovered drugs and a stash of cash.

Three men, aged 33, 38 and 51, were detained on suspicion of possession with intent to supply and taken into custody for questioning.

Another man, aged 31, in Weoley Castle was also detained for possession with intent to supply Class A drugs.

Chief Inspector Chanelle Whitney, from Birmingham Local Policing Area, said: "We won't tolerate any form of violence or criminal activity in the city, and we will continue to have a highly visible presence.

"We remain committed to working with the community to listen to concerns and act on intelligence. Our focus, as always, is to help keep you safe."
