West Midlands councillor appears in court after being charged with assaults on five people
The councillor has been suspended from the Green Party
A Birmingham councillor has appeared in court after being charged with assaults on five people, including three police officers.
Siobhan Harper-Nunes, 66, who was elected as a Green Party councillor for Ladywood in the city council’s local elections in May, made a brief appearance at Birmingham Magistrates Court today (Thursday, September 10).
Harper-Nunes, of Monument Road in Birmingham, was charged by West Midlands Police in August with assaulting three police officers, a member of police staff and a member of the public.
The charges are linked to an incident which led to officers being called to the junction of Monument Road and Hagley Road in Edgbaston, Birmingham, on August 6.
Following the assault charges, Harper-Nunes was suspended from the Green Party and is now listed as an independent councillor on the Birmingham City Council website.
Appearing at the city’s magistrates’ court, Harper-Nunes, who also ran as the Green Party candidate for West Midlands mayor in 2024, spoke only to confirm her name and her address.
District Judge Michelle Smith adjourned the hearing until September 17 following a request from Harper-Nunes’s solicitor Georgina Ellis, so CCTV footage related to the case could be reviewed.
The judge told the defendant, who wore a long beige coat, clutched a black handbag and left the court wearing sunglasses, she was released on unconditional bail until the next hearing.
