David Cartwright, aged 29, clipped a kerb in his Jaguar XKR and crossed into the path of the car driven by 46-year-old Colin Smith, of Boldmere, Birmingham.
Mr Smith's partner Dawn Brick was injured along with Cartwright, who shattered both ankles and broke his nose.
Vivienne Starkie, prosecuting, told Cannock Magistrates' Court yesterday that Cartwright had emerged from a bend at Dam Hill, Codsall, when he lost control.
He clipped the kerb which sent his car onto the other side of the road and into Mr Smith's blue Punto.
Experts could not prove the speed of either vehicle, but witness evidence from Miss Brick and a pedestrian who saw the Jaguar before the accident, on November 3 last year, suggested it was exceeding the 30mph limit.
Cartwright, of Marchant Road, Compton, admitted careless driving and was fined £640, ordered to pay £60 court costs, £15 victim surcharge and disqualified from driving for 18 months.
John Smitheman, defending, said Cartwright was sorry and insisted he had not been speeding.
