'I couldn't lift a bottle of milk' - Long serving Wolverhampton councillor and public servant who suffered from Covid to call it a day

A former Wolverhampton mayor has announced he is standing down from public office after 34 years service

Milkinderpal Jaspal, aged 66,  is the current Labour party member for Heath Town on the City of Wolverhampton  Council - he was first elected to the ward in 1991 and served as mayor in 2013-14.

He has held  senior leadership roles across local government, regional bodies, and major public‑interest organisations.

They include being  chairman of the £22bn West Midlands Pension Fund and becoming the youngest and first ethnic minority director appointed to the Birmingham International Airport board which he served for 17 years.

He was also a member of the West Midlands Police Authority in 1994-95 and served as a cabinet member and chairman of various bodies on the city council.

Last year he told the Express & Star how he was suffering from long Covid and 'struggled to lift a bottle of milk.'

He said: "It is time for a younger person to take over in a ward I have served for over 34 years so that, along with health issues mean I won't be standing again in May but I am proud of my public service for the people of Heath Town, Wolverhampton and the wider West Midlands region."
